One of the things that’s really useful for improvers as well as just useful for people in general is this idea of increasing your schema. And what that means is learning more about the world a little bit at a time regardless of whether you think it’s a topic that might be interesting or not.
In the last 30 hours I’ve been on a road trip and I’m listening to all these little podcasts. Most recently I listened to a podcast about screw worms. Now, in general I don’t care about screw worms. I don’t know what they are and I don’t know what their impact is. But it’s what came up and I learned that they’re really fascinating and that we have an ethical debate on whether we should eradicate the species right now.
All these little things that you learn along the way not only make you more interesting as a human, it makes you more interested in the world itself. And it makes you realize just how vast this world is and just how much stuff is out there. And you’d be amazed if you’re an improv actor how things can come up in a scene or if you’re just having a regular conversation with someone how these little bits of information end up flowing and becoming part of that conversation that you have.
Trust me, if you wanna get away from “how’s the weather” then improve your schema.
